Writing with your “eyes” – Gertrude Stein

“I write entirely with my eyes.”

Gertrude Stein.

I would say this is true of my writing, when I write I “see” this narrative taking place before me and I see these characters and hear their voices. I see the scene they see, experience the emotion they experience, this may sound strange to people, but it is true. People have commented on my work they felt it was like watching a film, it was very visual which was very lovely of them. This is how I write and I experience the narrative and the characters through this internal seeing Stein is talking about.

If at any point in my writing, I cannot “see” then my writing ceases to be effective. The parts of my writing where I was not “seeing,” maybe where I rushed through, these are the parts that I have to revise later and return to.

I just thought this quote exactly summed up my writing practice.

Thanks for reading 🙂
